UNL to Present Vadose Zone Nitrate Findings
Dr. Dan Snow and Jordan Sheild, UNL, will report on a three-year study of vadose zone nitrate in the Central Platte Natural Resources District (CPNRD); including some areas that were sampled in the 1990s. The report will show locations of the first eight core samples collected, comparison of nitrate profiles to previous time periods, and estimation of nitrate transport rates at each location. As part of this vadose zone study, 46 sites collected across the CPNRD between 1990 and 1996 have been digitized and are being used for comparison with samples being collected.
The report will be given at 2:00 p.m. at the CPNRD’s May board meeting to be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at the CPNRD’s office located at 215 Kaufman Avenue in Grand Island, NE.
OTHER ACTION/AGENDA ITEMS
-Bid Letting Jesse Mintken, assistant manager, will present eight bids received for Phase II construction of the Upper Prairie/Silver/Moores Flood Control Project in Hall County to the Eastern Projects Committee. The committee will take their recommendation to the board to award the bid.
-Hearing Requirements Don Blankenau, BWJ attorney, will meet with the Water Resources Committee to discuss the hearing process for variances, cease & desist, and water quality notices.
-Joint Weed Management Position The board will discuss partnering with the Tri-Basin NRD, Platte River Program, Nebraska Public Power District and Central Nebraska Public Power & Irrigation District to hire a weed management specialist.
-Spring Excess Flows Duane Woodward, hydrologist, will report on diversions of excess flows since April on the surface water canals that CPNRD manages in Dawson County.
-Tree Program- Kelly Cole, programs coordinator, will report on the 2016 tree and weed barrier sales.
-Natural Resources Conservation Service Joe Krolikowski, district liaison, will report to the board.
-Nebraska Natural Resources Commission Mick Reynolds, Middle Platte Basin representative, will report.
-Nebraska Association of Resources Districts (NARD) Jim Bendfeldt will report.
-Cost Share The board will consider applications through the Nebraska Soil and Water Conservation and CPNRD cost share programs.
-Budget- The Budget Committee will review the 2018 Fiscal budget. The board will review and take action on the budget at the June 22nd board meeting for the purpose of holding a public hearing in July.
